Celeste Robotics Team Places 4th in Robotics Competition

The Celeste ISD Robotics team placed 4th overall in competition held at Princeton High School on Saturday, October 23, 2010.  Mitch Jordan, CJHS science teacher, and Mr. Billy Shatto sponsored the robotics team.  Mr. Shatto, CISD parent, volunteered his time and technical expertise to help the students put their ideas into motion.  Team members consisted of 8th grade students that earned a place on the team by writing an essay describing their interests in robotics and 9th grade students that were participants on the 2009 robotics team.

The team received the robotics kit in early September.  They spent over six weeks building the robot.  According to Mr. Jordan, the kit consisted of all the parts allowed to use on the robot. The challenging part of the contest is that you are only allowed to use what comes in your kit, nothing else. Every team has the same basic materials; including motors, servos, lumber, PVC pipe, wire, and hardware.  All the robots compete to see who can most efficiently complete a task. The students learn basic building techniques, basics of electricity, and even some computer programming. Perhaps most importantly, the students learn how to think on their feet and solve problems.
