Celeste Junior High School recently honored local Veterans with a
Veterans’ Day Assembly. A Wall of Honor was created as a tribute to our
veterans. The Wall of Honor contained names of veterans with their branch of
service who are in some way connected to citizens in and around our community.
Members of the Celeste Junior High School Student Council greeted guests and
conducted the assembly.
Sergeant 1st Class Marlin Dorman was the featured guest speaker at
the Celeste Junior High Veterans’ Day Assembly on November 12, 2007. Sgt.
Dorman served honorably in the U.S. Army for 22 years. Through his duty and
service he was awarded the distinguished Purple Heart Medal, Bronze Star,
Berlin Occupational Medal, Good-Conduct Medal, and Combat Infantry Badge just to
name a few. Sergeant Dorman was a part of the “Lost Platoon” which was involved
in the Battle of la Drang. This battle was the United States'
first large-unit battle of the Vietnam War. We Were Soldiers Once . . .
and Young is a 1992 book published by Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore and war
journalist Joseph L. Galloway about this battle. The 2002 movie, We Were
Soldiers, is based on this book. Sergeant Dorman is the father
of Celeste ISD employee JoAnna Rhodes. His grandchildren, Jordan and Brandon
Benton, attend Celeste schools as well. Sergeant Dorman and his wife, Linda,
reside in Clyde, Texas where he continues to work for his country in the United
States Postal Service.
