Lightning

Lightning is a large static discharge, which is a charge through the air between two objects because of the buildup of static electricity. A thunder cloud is a large generator of static electricity. Air masses swirl in the clouds and positive and negative charges build up. When enough static charge builds up it causes a discharge between the cloud and the ground causing a spark which is what you see as lightning.
